The EIFF is delighted to announce the addition of British acting legend John Hurt to its Reel Life line-up. Hurt is one of Britain's most revered actors, a singular talent who has received great critical acclaim during his distinguished career.
Hurt first came to prominence with his BAFTA® award-winning portrayal of Quentin Crisp in the 1975 BBC drama The Naked Civil Servant. Hollywood soon came calling and in 1978 he received his first Oscar® nomination for the portrayal of Max in Midnight Express. A gut-wrenching role in the following year’s Alien saw Hurt star in one of popular cinema’s best loved scenes. However, it was his Oscar® nominated tour-de-force as John Merrick in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man which shot him to worldwide fame.
Hurt has followed this with a string of critical and commercial successes in a prolific career. From his role as the tragic Stephen Ward in Scandal; through his unforgettable turn as ‘Bird’ O’Donnell in The Field; to his scene-stealing role as an amoral bounty hunter in this year’s The Proposition; Hurt inhabits his eclectic and challenging choice of characters with an inimitable conviction.
The EIFF is honoured to have John Hurt as the Chairman of the 2006 Michael Powell Jury.
