Hiding alone in her farmhouse, Rose (Agata Kulesza) is a widowed Polish Masurian, attempting to survive in the aftermath of brutal attacks by Soviet soldiers and subject to systematic abuse by desperate Polish locals. Having returned her husband’s photograph and wedding ring, former soldier Tadeusz (Marcin Dorocinski) decides to stay and assist Rose in replanting her mine-infested potato field. Gradually a tender and fiercely loyal relationship develops between the two in this magnificently acted, captivating drama.
