Director Bio

Sunao Katabuchi majored in animation at Nihon University College of Art, Japan. After meeting Hayao Miyazaki, who was a guest lecturer at the university, Katabuchi began working as a scriptwriter on Miyazaki’s films while still a student. He served as assistant director on 1989’s Kiki’s Delivery Service, and made his directorial debut with the 1996 TV series Famous Dog Lassie.

Body

Hailed as one of the best Japanese films of the year, this enthralling and powerful animated historical drama is set in the 1930s and ‘40s in Hiroshima and Kure, Japan, roughly straddling the period before and after the atomic bomb struck Hiroshima. It follows a young woman, whose family cultivates edible seaweed, who agrees to an arranged marriage to a young man who works as a civilian for the navy. As the Pacific War approaches, her story charts rationing, bombings and the terrible impact war has on ordinary people.
