Mixing work by well-established masters of cinema with that of startling new directorial talent, this exciting strand takes a look back over the last decade of Spanish cinema, highlighting and celebrating award-winners, critics’ choices and film festival favourites.
This strand features Pablo Berger's dark comedy/wild fantasy: Abracadabra & his love-letter to silent cinema: Blancanieves. A selection of the best modern Spanish thrillers: Daniel Monzón's Cell 211; The Fury of a Patient Man from Raúl Arévalo; & Marshland from Alberto Rodriguez. Dark twisted worlds are represented in animated feature Birdboy: The Forgotten Children from Pedro Rivero & Alberto Vázquez; Pedro Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In; & The Last Circus from Álex de la Iglesia. Paula Ortiz's visually stunning adaptation of Federico García Lorca's play Blood Wedding, The Bride also screens in the strand, along with David Trueba's Beatles' inspired Living Is Easy with Eyes Closed and Carla Simón's beautiful directorial debut, Summer 1993.
