Director Bio

Luc Besson (b. 1959) is a French film director, screenwriter, and producer. He directed films such as Nikita (1990) and Leon: The Professional (1994). He won the César for Best Director and Best French Director for his sci-fi action film The Fifth Element (1997).

Essential to the curation of the Cinéma du Look strand in 2016 were the three classic titles by director Luc Besson: Subway (1985), Le Grande Bleu (1988), and La Femme Nikita (1990). In 2017, with Besson preparing for the worldwide release of his highly anticipated new sci-fi epic, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, (his first foray into the future since The Fifth Element), we revisit his stunning debut feature, the mute, monochrome Le Dernier Combat, starring Cinéma du Look mascot Jean Reno.
