Where do the workshops take place?

All workshops take place at The Young & the Wild HQ which is located at the Cornerstone Centre at St John's Church, Princes St. Details in our Access Section.

Who can attend the workshops?

Anyone aged 15-25 with a £5 Y&W Pass. Workshops are free but you need to let us know via youngandwild@edfilmfest.org.uk or 0131 228 6382 if you want to attend.

How will I know if the workshops are fully booked?

In the event that a workshop is fully booked, we'll make sure to update the event listing immediately.

When do the doors open?

Doors open 10 minutes before an event starts.

Friday, 22 June 2018 | 2pm – 6pm AND Saturday, 23 June 2018 | 10am – 3pm | Limited to 15 spaces.

Have you ever experienced a moment that felt like a scene from a film? Have you ever found yourself totally absorbed by someone's story as they tell it? This is the spark at the heart of factual filmmaking where documentary, reality, storytelling and independent production meet and merge.

This two-day filmmaking workshop, run by Tomás Sheridan of Polifilm Media, offers a unique opportunity to learn the fundamentals of documentary filmmaking and put them into practice by creating a short documentary in a week. All films will premiere at our Closing Event on Saturday 30 June 2018.

Technical and creative support will be available throughout production.

Before you pick up a camera, the best way to visualise a film is through shot design and storyboards. Whether in animation or live-action, storyboards are an important first part of filmmaking. This hands-on workshop will teach you everything you need to design your shots and create your storyboards, ready to be filmed! Led by Screen Education Edinburgh.

This hands-on workshop will teach you everything you need to know about working with cameras. You will learn how to use composition, lens types, lighting and mise en scène to enhance your storytelling and create a polished look on a minimal budget. Find out how some simple tricks can enhance your image and transform your film from amateur to pro. Led by Screen Education Edinburgh.

Please note this is a more advanced workshop aimed at young people with some experience of filmmaking.

Everyone's A Critic: A Film Journalism Workshop

Monday, 25 June 2018 | 4.30pm – 6.30pm | Workshop Space | Limited to 15 spaces.

Ever wanted to learn more about film journalism? What are some of the key elements that go into an informative, entertaining film review for print and/or broadcast? In this fully interactive workshop, we will discuss a variety of journalistic styles, drawing on examples from publications such as The Guardian, The New Yorker, Film Comment and Sight & Sound. Participants will be encouraged to write their own pieces and offer constructive feedback on each other’s writing. The workshop will be led by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh) who has more than 15 years’ experience as a film critic. His reviews and features have appeared regularly in publications such as Sight & Sound and on various BBC Radio programmes.
