Manta Ray (Kraben rahu)

Part of the World Perspectives Strand

This poetic and powerful film is the feature debut of Thai writer-director Phuttiphong Aroonpheng, and its striking originality points to him as a talent to watch. Winner of the Orizzonti Award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival, Manta Ray downplays dialogue in the eerie story of a young fisherman (Wanlop Rungkumjad) who nurses an injured refugee (Aphisit Hama) back to health in his ramshackle home. Things become complicated when the fisherman’s estranged wife, Saijai (Rasmee Wayrana), returns, pregnant by another man, and attempts to seduce the refugee. [15]
