A Thousand Years of Good Prayers
Pasha Lychnikoff, Faye Yu, Henry O, Vida Ghahremani / Fiction / English, Mandarin, Farsi
Heartfelt account of family life and cultural displacement.
An elderly Chinese man, Mr Shi, travels to Spokane to visit Yilan, the daughter he hasn’t seen for twelve years. Their relationship is strained and Yilan abandons him continually; left to his own devices, the dignified Mr Shi attempts to adapt to his alien surroundings. Centering on an endearing lead performance by Henry O, Wayne Wang’s subtle exploration of generational and cultural communication shares many themes with his accompanying, yet stylistically individual film The Princess of Nebraska.
