P&I - Director Bio

Irish filmmaker Andrew Legge loves playing with film form and music as part of the story telling process.  He has made a series of award-winning short films. The Unusual Inventions of Henry Cavendish, a silent love story, was partly shot on a hand wound 16mm camera and screened in Dublin, New York and the Barbican in London with live accompaniment from a pianist. The Girl with the Mechanical Maiden was screened with a twenty-five-piece orchestra and team of Foley artists dressed in lab coats at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and the Lincoln Center in New York.

EIFF is pleased to welcome Andrew Legge, Stefanie Martini, Emma Appleton to Edinburgh this Summer to present LOLA and meet audiences in a post-screening Q&A.

In 1941, music-loving sisters Thomasina and Martha Hanbury build a machine called LOLA, which can intercept radio and TV broadcasts from the future. Initially using it to become the first fans of David Bowie, as WWII escalates the siblings deploy their precognition contraption in the military intelligence fight against the Nazis. Cleverly constructed using distressed B&W film stock, this playful first feature mixes fake celluloid newsreels with genuine archive, plus sardonic synth-pop songs by The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon.
