Writer-director Nadav Lapid’s striking new film – Golden Bear-winner at this year’s Berlinale – is vibrant and fearless. Israeli ex-soldier Yoav (Tom Mercier) aims to rid himself of his national identity by moving to Paris and refusing to speak Hebrew. However, Israel and its language just won’t leave him alone. Lapid cleverly plays with clichés and national stereotypes (whether they be French, Israeli or Palestinian). Yoav’s abrasive and funny behaviour drives this challenging and intriguing film, partly based on Lapid’s own story. [15]
