BOTF: Ode to Joy
Part of the Best of the Fest Strand
Charlie (Martin Freeman on great form) suffers from cataplexy, a symptom of narcolepsy that causes him to collapse when he has strong emotions such as sadness, anger and, yes, happiness. He has mastered thinking non-happy thoughts, but when he meets Francesca (Morena Baccarin), things change. Charlie thinks he can’t be around Francesca because she makes him happy, even beginning a relationship with quirky Bethany (Melissa Rauch, The Big Bang Theory). Ode to Joy is charming and funny, driven by great performances and real warmth for its left-field characters. [12A]
