And With A Smile, The Revolution! (Avec un sourire, la révolution!)

Part of the Documentaries Strand

Montreal-based filmmaker Alexandre Chartrand returns to Catalan politics, the subject of his 2016 documentary, Le peuple interdit. Picking up where his last film left off, he follows politicians, protesters and cultural commentators in the lead-up to the independence referendum of October 2017. Branded illegal by Spain’s constitutional court, this latest vote added another layer to the country’s worst political crisis in years. With several of the protagonists in jail or in exile, the repercussions of the vote will be felt for years to come. [12A]
