Acute Misfortune

Part of the World Perspectives Strand

Acute Misfortune is a striking, brilliant and unconventional portrait of one of Australia’s most acclaimed and idiosyncratic painters, Adam Cullen. In following the working relationship between the now-dead Cullen (Daniel Henshall, Snowtown) and his biographer, Erik Jensen (Toby Wallace), over a four-year period, Acute Misfortune is reminiscent of tough genre pieces Snowtown or Chopper. Taking no stance on Cullen’s many contradictions (a talented painter who loved drugs and guns), the film instead represents an unlikely friendship, with Henshall especially impressive as the provocative painter.
