Director Bio

Jennie Livingston is a filmmaker best known for the documentary Paris is Burning (1990), which won the 1991 Sundance Grand Jury Prize. She is also the director of Who’s the Top? (2005), which screened at more than 150 film festivals on nearly every continent. She has lectured on film at dozens of colleges and cultural institutions in the US, including Yale, Brooklyn College and Rutgers University.

A unique record of the New York drag ball scene in the 1980s. Featuring amazing sequences filmed at the competitive ballroom events, and memorably honest, insightful interviews with various key people, director Jennie Livingston’s exploration of this important movement and its evolution is superb. The film played at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, and at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Teddy Award for Best Documentary Film.
