Director Bio

Mai Zetterling (1925-1994) is a Swedish actor and film director. After leaving acting behind, she started directing in the 1960s. She is known for films such as Scrubbers (1982), The Girls (1968) and Loving Couples (1964).

Having enjoyed a huge success with Alan Clarke’s Scum, producer Don Boyd found himself facing the daunting prospect of delivering a sequel. Reluctant to do so, he came up with a compromise, another story set behind bars, but this time, told from a female perspective. Directed by the brilliant Mai Zetterling, Scrubbers is a neglected British classic featuring a cast including stars of the future such as Kathy Burke, Miriam Margoyles, Pam St. Clement, and Scotland’s very own Robbie Coltrane.
