In This Corner of the World (Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni)
Part of the World Perspectives Strand
Hailed as one of the best Japanese films of the year, this enthralling and powerful animated historical drama is set in the 1930s and ‘40s in Hiroshima and Kure, Japan, roughly straddling the period before and after the atomic bomb struck Hiroshima. It follows a young woman, whose family cultivates edible seaweed, who agrees to an arranged marriage to a young man who works as a civilian for the navy. As the Pacific War approaches, her story charts rationing, bombings and the terrible impact war has on ordinary people.
