Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken, William H Macy, Marcia Gay Harden, Breckin Meyer, Phil Hebert

A lighthearted comedy caper from three of Hollywood’s heavyweights.

It is hard to believe Christopher Walken, Morgan Freeman and William H Macy have never before appeared on screen together, in any combination. Here, finally, they do – and each Hollywood veteran shows a game determination to eschew their weighty past roles in favour of some feather-light comic fun. Roger (Walken), Charles (Freeman) and George (Macy) are museum security guards with more than a vested interest in their jobs. Each has a favourite piece of art which he habitually admires in his own eccentric way; each is therefore horrified to learn that his favourite objet is to be transferred to a museum in Denmark. Taking it upon themselves to save their pieces from the move, the three art-loving musketeers hatch a cunning plan to steal them back. Macy – perhaps, of the three, the most familiar to audiences for comedy, considering his Oscar®-nominated turn in Fargo – gives in to the role of officious George with endearing gusto. Taking control of this unassuming bunch of criminal masterminds, he co-ordinates them through their ingenious plan with shambling determination. He also sportingly bares all for the sake of winning back their spoils… Walken, evidently enjoying the opportunity to exercise his comedic muscle, surrenders to the capering with his own unique panache. Usually celebrated for his dangerous and menacing qualities, Walken here transforms those traits into the underpinnings of a deadpan and unpredictable comic performance. Of the three, it is Freeman who is the least identified with the light-hearted. Yet he too gives in to the silliness with wholehearted flair. Lending his warm dignity and mellifluous voice to the delicate Charles, Freeman is not only a refreshingly serene presence, but also a subtly camp one. With Oscar®-winner Marcia Gay Harden topping the stellar cast as Roger’s glamorous, high maintenance wife, this is a deft and seamlessly layered heist comedy. Nimbly assembled by British director Peter Hewitt (Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey; Thunderpants; Garfield) this is an unexpected pleasure that lifts its audience all the way to its perfectly farcical crescendo.

This was a really sweet comedy. It has brilliant comedic turns from all the stars, it won't be the best film you see this year but it leaves you with that warm fuzzy feeling that you've just spent a couple of hours of fun. It's very much like an old style screwball comedy and I suspect will be likely to hit the mark with smarter audience and older audience who can appreciate the humour. My personal favourite was Morgan Freeman who I've never seen in a comedy role before and who I thought was fantastic.
