The Maid (La Nana)

Catalina Saavedra, Claudia Celedón, Mariana Loyola, Alejandro Goic, Anita Reeves, Del?na Guzmán

A loyal servant goes to extremes to keep in with the family she loves...

Raquel doesn’t want any new servants on her turf. Indeed, she is prepared to discourage new recruits by any means necessary: locking them out of the house, framing them for pet murder... no maid survives. Until one does – and everything changes... Funny, tense and unpredictable, this impressive second feature by Sebastian Silva is powered by a quite unforgettable performance from Catalina Saavedra.

Well that wasn't what I was expecting. I was half thinking it was going to be The Shining.... so, it was quite tense in bits where with hindsight all she was doing was peeling some tatties etc. Instead it was a strong character-based domestic drama. Quite amusing - a slice of Hispanic life. I must say, the idea of a live-in maid revolts me even more than ever now.

The only film it reminds me of is Vera Drake, without the plot. It has that domestic setting, slow pace, tense looks, and low-key drama.

Loved this film. Beautifully subtle and the lead actress was brilliant. So well done.
