A smart, witty and stylish account of an eventful French girlhood.

It’s 1977, and Stella Vlaminck (note the director’s initials for a hint as to the film’s autobiographical origins) is an eleven year old with an unusually old soul. Raised by young parents who run a bar and like a good time, she’s out of place at her posh school, and torn between her desires to belong and rebel. Alive with spot-on period detail and irreverent wit, this is a film to fall in love with.

I enjoyed this film very much. I wish I had asked, however: did Sylvie get back the boy who punched her on her first day, and did she speak to Eric in her second year at school?
