Shirin
Golshifteh Farahani, Mahnaz Afshar, Niki Karimi, Juliette Binoche
Iran’s master filmmaker presents a challenging but beautiful study in how people watch.
Abbas Kiarostami (Close Up; A Taste of Cherry; Ten) here reverses the experience of spectatorship: we look out from the screen/stage side at the audience immersed in a performance or a film, a version of the Persian fable of love and female sacrifice Khosrow and Shirin. As the piece unfolds and the faces react, a subtle and surprisingly touching study emerges of the social and emotional power of art.
