A century-leaping music and film installation. Commissioned by Streetwise Opera, My Secret Heart is a music and film installation written by electronic composer and Warp artist Mira Calix, video artists Flat-e and sound designer David Sheppard. The work is based on Allegri’s haunting 17th-century choral masterpiece Miserere Mei – a work highly protected by the Vatican in its infancy. Described as "mesmerising and inspiring" by The Guardian, the film is projected onto a purpose-built 360-degree screen surrounded by a ring of speakers, creating an immersive experience for audiences as they walk around or sit in place. Streetwise Opera is an award-winning charity that uses music as a tool to help homeless people move forward in their lives. Through 2008, Mira Calix and Flat-e worked with 100 Streetwise performers from homeless centres around the UK. The performers devised movements inspired by Miserere Mei and were filmed behind a screen as silhouettes; Flat-e created a seamless image which is projected onto the 360-degree screen. Together with a small professional choir, Streetwise performers were also recorded singing sections of Allegri’s original score individually and in groups; Mira Calix combined these voices, recorded strings and electronics. My Secret Heart tours internationally through 2009/10. See www.mysecretheart.co.uk for more information
