Wim Wenders transposed to China: a beguiling rural road movie.
Outer Mongolia, and with retirement beckoning at the local mine, train driver Old Zhu decides to visit his family – alone. His young apprentice, however, has other ideas; as their male camaraderie drifts through China’s changing landscape, a beauteous road movie swirls across the screen like train smoke across an azure sky. Intimate in emotion, yet stunning in scope, this is cinema at its most rapturous.
