Barun Chanda, Parumita Chowdhury, Sharmila Tagore

A special screening of an Indian classic in honour of our guest Sharmila Tagore.

Well-to-do Calcutta in the early 70s, and company executive Shyamalendu, the kind of character played by Jack Lemmon in American cinema, is climbing the career ladder. His sister-in-law Tutul (Sharmila Tagore) visits him at a time of worker unrest, which Shyamalendu deals with in an unedifying manner. Satyajit Ray’s rich and perceptive dissection of India’s emerging middle class is as pointed now as it was upon first release.
