Cinematic Television 1: In Treatment
Gabriel Byrne, Josh Charles, Embeth Davidtz, Melissa George, Blair Underwood, Mia Wasikowska, Dianne Wiest
He’s listening...
Tackling the darker aspects of the human condition, In Treatment focuses on Dr Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne), a psychiatric therapist who invites clients – a traumatised war veteran, an emotionally damaged teenager, a couple at odds over abortion, and a woman obsessed with him – into his own home for treatment. The damaging effects of absorbing such pain and confusion are also examined, as Weston too seeks therapy from his former mentor, Doctor Gina Toll (an EMMY-winning Dianne Wiest). Based on the Israeli show Be’Tipul created by Hagai Levi, Rodrigo Garcia’s brilliantly conceived drama for HBO is designed to air five nights every week in four 30-minute episodes each featuring one of Weston’s regular clients, and finally a fifth where he himself attends therapy. This innovative structure allows for far deeper character exploration than is standard; consequently, In Treatment flourishes as a pioneering example of contemporary television at its best. Byrne – in a Golden Globe winning performance – is magnificent; his cinematic experience and charismatic presence serve the style and subject matter perfectly. In collaboration with HBO, EIFF is proud to present the entire first week of this captivating, thought-provoking drama.
