Bengali Paradise Movie Hall

From the 18th to the 20th June, the EIFF invites you to travel to a magical little forest cinema in West Bengal. But you don't have to take a flight. Instead, using simple means – painted banyan trees, dappled lighting, incense, the sound of birds and monkeys – we have converted St John's Church Hall in the heart of Edinburgh into a wee forest in which we will show classic Bengali films by Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Tapan Sinha, who died in January. Best of all, we are honoured that the Bengali muse of Ray and legendary Bollywood movie star Sharmila Tagore will travel from Delhi for the event! Join us as we try to open a window on a world, and please "eke out our imperfections with your thoughts."

Mark Cousins? - RESPECT! With your West Bengali retrospective you've yet again.opened our eyes to the wonders of 'forgotten' World Cinema. My personal highlight being 'Devi', which features two of the most nuanced performances - including the sublime Sharmila Tagore - and masterful direction and storytelling by the great, great Satyajit Ray. A gripping and thought-provoking story of human folly - and such beautiful cinematography. Not only that, you also treat us to Sharmila herself. How lucky are we?! Thanks Mark! Thanks Sharmila!
