Friday 8 August

Death Defying Acts

Guy Pearce turns in a typically terrific performance as legendary escapologist Harry Houdini in Gillian Armstrong's Edinburgh-based romantic drama. Stirring stuff, with some great cinematography and period sets.

Elegy

Elegy formed part of Sir Ben Kingsley's EIFF 2008 hat-trick (alongside The Wackness and Transsiberian), and plays opposite the superb Penelop Cruz in this adaptation of a Philip Roth novel.

Elite Squad

The relentless, hard-hitting story of a crack Rio police unit, Elite Squad is an assault on the senses and sensibilities. Based on the account of a former officer, this is social filmmaking with an edge.

Friday 15 August

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

Frances McDormand plays a mousy domestic helper to Amy Adam's rising star in this uplifting period piece. Our own Hannah McGill compared it to the screwball classics of the 1930's.

Friday 22 August

Somers Town

A deserved winner of the Michael Powell Award, Shane Meadows' latest started out life as a short film, but with an inspired performance from This is England's Thomas Turgoose has become one of the year's best films.

Friday 29 August

The Wackness

Sir Ben Kingsley's madcap psychiatrist doles out advice to a downbeat teen in this 1994 set 'dramedy', in the vein of Thumbsucker. Far from being 'wack', this EIFF audience favourite is undoubtedly 'dope'.

Check back on August 29 for the full line-up of September releases.
