Cutting edge cinema

The Night Moves and Under the Radar strands are back by popular demand. We reveal the late night cinematic treats at this year's Festival.

They may be realtively young as EIFF strands go - Night Moves is entering its third year and Under the Radar only its second - but they've already become firm favourites with the Festival audience.

Both strands patrol the extremes of cinema - the cutting edge, the cult and the undiscovered.

Night Moves proudly boasts a World Premiere for Dario Argento's much anticipated film, Giallo. The celebrated director of Suspiria and Deep Red, has turned out another genre classic with his latest work.

Also receiving a World Premiere are Stuart Hazeldine’s Exam and Laurence Gough’s SALVAGE, both from the UK.

Jamie Blanks directs Jim Caviezel in Australian film Long Weekend, and classic Asian horror is resplendent in Kelvin Tong’s Rule #1.

Rufus Swell and Emmanuelle Béart are also in dangerous Thai/Burmese waters in Fabrice Du Welz’s Vinyan while Pontypool from Bruce McDonald will satisfy all zombie fans.

The programme is completed by Scott Sanders’ Black Dynamite - a razor sharp parody of the 70’s blaxploitation genre.

Meanwhile the sophomore year for Under the Radar demonstartes the EIFF programmers skill in discovering daring new filmmakers.

Featuring five films, including two World Premieres, no subject matters are taboo across Under the Radar, including Zach Clark’s wild sex satire Modern Love is Automatic.

Zombies return in the World Premiere of Romeo and Juliet vs The Living Dead, while Appalachian mountain dancer Jesco White is portrayed as a gory legend in Dominic Murphy’s debut, White Lightnin'.

Sinister secrets of a lonely London life are revealed in the world premiere of urban nightmare Tony and Robert Byington’s hilarious Harmony and Me is an anti-romcom that tackles heartbreak, bad sex and the social rights of coma victims.

Tickets for the films screening in the Night Moves and Under the Radar programmes go on sale at midday on Friday 8 May. The full programme will be announced on Wednesday 6 May.
