The EIFF is delighted to announce the addition of Hollywood legend Brian De Palma to its star-studded Reel Life line-up. Celebrated director De Palma has helmed a host of hugely influential and successful features in a career which has spanned five decades.
Artisitc Director Shane Danielsen added the following:
"Brian De Palma is one of the finest living American filmmakers: a product of the New American Cinema of the 1970s who went on, along with a mere handful of his peers (Scorsese, Spielberg, Coppola), to become a household name.
Born in 1940, he came to attention with his 1970 satire Hi, Mom! (starring a young Robert De Niro), but first gained mainstream success three years later, with the classic Sisters. Thereafter, his career skyrocketed, thanks to a run of critical and box-office triumphs: genre-defining Hollywood hits like Carrie, Dressed To Kill, Body Double and Blow Out. And, of course, Scarface – arguably the most influential gangster movie of the last fifty years.
And did we mention his magnificent version of The Untouchables? That he made the first (and best) Mission: Impossible flick? Or the great Carlito’s Way? A virtuosic technician, De Palma is also a stylist par excellence: indebted to Hitchcock, yet at the same time transcending his influence, to create a body of work without parallel in or out of Hollywood. He has (as critic Pauline Kael once noted approvingly) "the wickedest baroque sensibility in American movies."
He visits EIFF as a special guest, to discuss the legacy of the New American Cinema in an onstage interview. Don’t miss the chance to meet this legendary filmmaker!"
