Due to conflicting commitments, Lodge Kerrigan's Keane is no longer screening at this year's Festival. However, EIFF is delighted to announce the addition of the World Premiere of Lasse Hallström's An Unfinished Life.
"Both ourselves and Keane's makers very much regret losing the opportunity to screen Keane at Edinburgh but, regrettably, these things happen sometimes, within the world of film festivals."
"However we are extremely proud to be presenting, in its place, the World Premiere of Lasse Hallström's latest feature. He's a highly respected filmmaker, and this ensemble drama will doubtless please audiences immensely," says EIFF Artistic Director Shane Danielsen.
A story of heartbreak and reunion, An Unfinished Life unfolds against the backdrop of the rugged Wyoming ranch lands. Robert Redford stars as Einar Gilkyson, a tough-skinned, retired rancher who long ago turned his back on memories. Still mourning the death of his only son a decade earlier, Einar has let his ranch, and his marriage, fall into ruin. Consumed by bitterness and grief, Einar spends his days caring for his hired hand, and last trusted friend, Mitch (Morgan Freeman), who was gravely injured in an encounter with a grizzly bear.
But Einar's life of solitude is turned upside down by the unexpected arrival of his daughter-in-law, Jean (Jennifer Lopez), the very person he blames for his son's accident. Jean shows up broke, on the run and with a girl named Griff (newcomer Becca Gardner), who she swears is the granddaughter Einar never knew he had.
Slowly, as Einar confronts his buried emotions, 11-year-old Griff's curiosity about Western life, and her longing for family and a father figure, begin to chip away at the stone that was once Einar's heart - opening up the way for unexpected connection, adventure, mercy and true reunion. Please Note: Customers who have purchased tickets for Keane can get a full refund from the Film Festival box office or choose to simply swap their tickets for An Unfinished Life.
