Reel Life takes you behind the camera with cinematographer John Mathieson.
Medieval armies, serial killers, rock stars and gladiators have all passed in front of the lens of John Mathieson’s camera.
As a cinematographer and director of photography, Mathieson’s films credits are a balance of smaller British arthouse films on the one hand, and multi-million dollar Hollywood blockbusters on the other.
Mathieson has worked with director Ridley Scott on a total of four features— Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator (for which he earned an Oscar® nomination) Hannibal, and Matchstick Men. As a team, director and cinematographer work very well; Mathieson’s acute narrative sensibility and vivid sense of colour compliments Scott’s fluid, improvisational directorial style.
More recently, Mathieson has been working on a project closer to home— as cinematographer for Stephen Woolley's Stoned, a film that charts the gradual demise of Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones. Thanks to Mathieson’s evocative cinematography, Stoned meticulously recreates the look and feel of the psycadelic 1960’s.
Come get the inside scoop on the making of Stoned, what’s like to work with master director Ridley Scott, and where cinematography is headed in the future.
