A look into the skin deep world of modelling, starring (and co-produced) by model turned actress Diane Kruger. On the surface, the world of modelling appears privileged and glamorous, but as Fabienne Berthaud’s Frankie reveals, the reality is quite different.
Already at the end of her modelling career at the relatively tender age of 26, Frankie (Diane Kruger) struggles against her inevitable descent into obscurity.
Told in a series of flashbacks from the sanatorium where she is now confined, Frankie follows the model’s life of casting calls, photo-shoots and meetings, revealing the emotional highs and lows that accompany life on the catwalk.
Kruger’s powerful portrayal of Frankie, suffused throughout with intelligence and grim humour, is made all the more real in light of the fact that the film was offered to Kruger towards the end of her own modelling career— but some time before her role as Helen in Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy made her into an international star.
Filmed over a period of three years and shot in high-definition video that lends the film a wonderful rough beauty, Frankie acts like a mirror, revealing the often devastating effects of an image-obsessed society.
Winners of EIFF 2014’s short film awards and two of its documentary premieres have been nominated for 2015 BAFTAs.
