To mark the centenary of Michael Powell's birth, the 59th Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) announces a major retrospective of this truly great British filmmaker's work.

In conjunction with the retrospective, Powell’s widow Thelma Schoonmaker, Academy Award winning editor of The Aviator and long-term collaborator of Martin Scorsese, will participate in a Reel Life interview with EIFF Artistic Director Shane Danielsen. Schoonmaker was previously a guest of the Festival in 1993 where her masterclass on editing Raging Bull, for which she also won an Academy Award, was deemed one of the highlights of recent years.

The Michael Powell retrospective features a wide selection of the filmmaker’s work; from his epic international debut The Edge of the World (1937), to his critical and commercial successes including Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948), to little known war stories like The 49th Parallel (1941). There will be a total of sixteen features and one short film in the programme, spanning the length of Powell’s career.

"Michael Powell was arguably the greatest filmmaker Britain produced- a showman (these films are nothing if not entertaining) who happened to have the soul of a poet. His touch was alchemical, transforming everything it touched, and transcending the meager confines of realism to achieve something utterly singular and extraordinary," says EIFF Artistic Director Shane Danielsen.

The Thelma Schoonmaker Reel Life interview and the Michel Powell retrospective are both part of this year’s amazing Festival programme. The full list of films and events will be announced on 13th July, and the Box Office opens on 15th July.
