Zac Nicholson

Zac Nicholson is a self-taught Director of Photography who began his cinematic life as tea-maker and has been honing his craft ever since. Born in London, Zac took a foundation art course at Central St Martin’s before graduating with a BA in Fine Art from Sheffield Poly. He describes his approach to cinematography as “instinctive and organic”.
In 2007, along with just a handful of other crew members, Zac shot Simon Welsford’s micro-budget feature Jetsam, which won Best No Budget Film at LIFF. Esther May Campbell’s short September (2008), was lit by Zac and won many awards including the 2009 BAFTA for Best Short Film. Zac has shot three features in total: the aforementioned Jetsam, Special People (2007) and Skeletons (2010).
Zac has assisted Jean-Francois Robin, Pierre Aim and Todd Haynes, all of whom he cites as great influences on his work. He is particularly skilled at camera operating, and regularly works with DOP Danny Cohen BSC. The pair are currently collaborating on Shane Meadows’ TV series This is England 1986.
