Festival for Filmmakers: Technology Focus

EIFF is reinforcing its remit as a genuine 'festival for filmmakers', with a series of fascinating presentations, debates, screenings and masterclasses that focus on cinematography and 3D production today – all aimed at assisting filmmakers get to grips with today's range of film and digital choices.

 

Lowry Digital

Acclaimed LA specialists Lowry Digital, responsible restoring a vast number of motion pictures including The Robe and From Russia With Love, will outline its offerings for the early adopters of digital capture technology and the ever-increasing imaging issues that burden post-production today.

Expect an impressive array of before-and-after images, from disparate capture devices including 3D and large format, that address the issues facing everyone working, or with an interest, in post production and restoration.

Digital Cinema Exhibition: Opportunities & Challenges

The Cinema Exhibitors’ Association and UK Film Council, supported by Screen Digest, will set out a shared analysis of the current digital cinema market and the financial models which have emerged to support its growth. Discussion will focus on the range of opportunities and challenges that digital technology presents to the cinema exhibition sector, with an additional focus on – and demonstration of - digital 3D cinema.

Ted Schilowitz, RED Digital Cinema's Employee No.1, will give a visual overview of RED's current 4k RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera, and it's upcoming Scarlet and Epic DSMC cameras that are currently in development. Footage from feature movies, TV shows, commercials and music videos shot with the RED ONE from all over the world will screen throughout the presentation.

3D Explained: Understanding 3D Production & Post

With an average of one 3D stereo movie per week scheduled for the cinema in 2009, the UK's leading 3D stero expert Phil Streather of Principal Large Format will provide a fascinating insight into how to shoot and post produce 3D stereo productions, with plenty of tips, tricks and advice.

2009 sees an unprecedented rise in 3D theatrical releases, and cinemas worldwide are ramping up their facilities accordingly. But just how does the technology work? And what potential does it really have in artistic terms? Using the example of the spectacular 2003 nature film Bugs!, which is currently being transformed into even more spectacular 3D, Phil will explain the secrets of the technology that’s set to re-revolutionise cinema exhibition.

A special discussion of the British Society of Cinematographers’ forthcoming Film and Digital Image Evaluations 2009, which tested 19 different film and digital cameras, followed by a debate about image quality and the choice of cameras and production formats in today’s world.

This year’s Festival has a strong cinematographic theme and a highlight will be Seamus McGarvey BSC ASC in conversation with Anthony Dod Mantle DFF BSC, this year's Oscar-winning cinematographer for Slumdog Millionaire, a motion picture he shot using film and the latest digital cameras. Anthony also recently shot Lars von Trier's Antichrist using digital.

Are you one of the people who will be making the next film to be shown in Edinburgh, Cannes or worldwide? The changing structures of independent films and studio motion pictures call for different levels involvement during prep between the director, writer, producer and DP – to find the cinematic techniques that will bring the the story to life on the screen.

DP Trevor Forrest, a rising star in cinematography, will show clips and discuss crucial production matters with examples from his films, including Someone Else, which premiered at the EIFF in 2007, his latest UK production Tormented, and Una Noche. Students or practicing filmmakers are welcome.

CameraZone

The CameraZone is a 2-day special, where filmmakers can check out cameras and associated post production systems.

Demonstrations of cameras and systems will take place in venues accessible to Festival delegates between 26 - 27 June.

Delegates who are at the festival for the full duration may also be interested in a special screening of the documentary about the late great Jack Cardiff BSC, who shot such acclaimed movies as The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life And Death and The African Queen.

In honour of the late Jack Cardiff (1914 – 2009) EIFF is proud to present a free screening of Craig McCall’s documentary PAINTING WITH LIGHT, which reveals the influences behind Jack’s stunning, Oscar winning cinematography on the classic British film Black Narcissus. Martin Scorsese, Thelma Schoonmaker Powell and actress Kathleen Byron (Sister Ruth) among others, explain the unique power and timeless allure of this masterpiece which brought him world-wide acclaim and propelled him to the top of his profession, making his name synonymous with Technicolor photography and widely recognised as the greatest cinematographer of all time.

The screening will be followed by a brief Q&A with Craig McCall
