UK Media Team presents:
Video on Demand - what's in it for me?
09:15 - 11:00, Filmhouse 3
Distribution online opens up new opportunities for filmmakers to make their content commercially available to audiences worldwide.
In this session, brought to you jointly by MEDIA Antenna Scotland and the UK MEDIA Desk, representatives from the pioneering European VoD services Movieurope and Moviepilot will explain how filmmakers can use their portals, and how they have already started making catalogues of films and other audiovisual programmes available for download on a commercial basis.
Both Movieurope and Moviepilot have received support from the MEDIA Programme’s VoD/DCD scheme, which is designed to help European rights owners make European content available online - by subsidising the cost of creating and running a VoD/ DCD (Digital Cinema Distribution) portal.
The panel will be joined by John Dick from the MEDIA Programme in Brussels, who will present the current call for VoD/DCD proposals, which has an increased budget of €5.9 million and closes on 14 July 2008.
Industry event - open to all delegate pass holders.
Who Needs a Sales Agent? The Ins and Outs of International Sales and Distribution
12:30 - 14:30, Henry Irving room, Lyceum Theatre
Can filmmakers really sell their films themselves? How can they reach the right potential distributors? It’s easy for a year to go by dealing with film festivals and trying to find distribution,
without making progress on another film. Having an international sales agent to represent their films frees filmmakers to get on with their next projects as well as connecting them with markets they might not otherwise be able to reach.
Helen Loveridge started her career in the film world in the programming department of the London Film Festival, after which she worked for international film sales companies in the UK including Jane Balfour Films. She co-founded Fortissimo Film Sales in Amsterdam, one of the leading sources for Asian cinema. From 2002 until 2005, Helen was Managing Director, then Executive Director, of the Seattle International Film Festival, for whom she currently consults.
After returning to Europe, Helen worked in acquisitions with The Works in the UK. She has been consultant to film festivals around the world and a consultant for European script and marketing initiatives. Helen has worked with many renowned directors, including Wong Kar-Wai, Juzo Itami, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Mira Nair.
In an informal group meeting, you can discuss with Helen and other participants (to be announced) how to approach sales agents, whether you need one, and how the relationship works from both sides.

Have you got a great idea for a movie? This is it! Your chance to pitch your movie idea directly to a panel of top British film executives. These are the people who matter. They are the people who buy scripts. They are the people who decide what will be made and what won’t.
To pitch, just drop a fiver in the hat and the floor is yours. You have up to two minutes to convince the panellists to read your script or make your film. They can, and will, gong you off if you are boring.
Past panellists include Charles Steel, Menhaj Huda, Norma Heyman, Roger Corman, Nik Powell, Ewan McGregor, Sally Caplan, Tracey Scoffield, Steve Gaydos, Matthew Vaughn, Shane Meadows, Matthew Dench and Morwenna Banks.
Take it as seriously as you like, but remember - past pitches have gone into production, including Meet the Parents, 51st State, Siamese Cop and White Bhaji.
The event will be followed by an afterparty hosted by Shooting People and Wallflower Press, who will be celebrating the Edinburgh launch of Electric Sheep Magazine.
Industry event - open to all delegate pass holders.
