Director’s Lab Session (Open):
The Nuts and Bolts of Development

The Director’s Lab is a five-day, residential development programme for six emerging UK feature film directors. The Director’s Lab is supported by the UK Film Council, Film4, 4Talent, Skillset and EIFF and is managed by Lifesize Pictures.
Throughout the programme the Director’s Lab is opening up one workshop per day to EIFF industry delegates, further details of which will be available soon, so please check back for updates.

Warp X: Where Next?

Warp X is a unique venture in the British film industry - a sustainable digital studio that is driven by creative talent and a dynamic digital business model that rewards everyone involved in the films.
The final films on the first slate are now shooting, so it's a good time for Warp X (supported by the UK Film Council, Film4, Screen Yorkshire, EM Media and Optimum Releasing) to review their progress and how they see the future shaping up. This is an opportunity for producers, writers and directors to get up close and personal with a microstudio which has two films screening in the EIFF programme, A Complete History of my Sexual Failures and Donkey Punch.

This year’s panel includes: Jo Nolan, Chief Executive Screen South; Maggie Ellis Head of Production, Film London; Bill Lawrence, Creative Director, Showroom Sheffield & Board Director Screen Yorkshire, David Wilkinson, CEO Guerilla Films. Between them they have the skills and experience to develop a film, finance it, distribute it, screen it in the cinema, on DVD and sell to TV, offering delegates a complete advisory service that’s hard to beat – and free!

Roger Deakins & Seamus McGarvey in Conversation

Lights… Camera… Learn from two legends of cinematography. Three-fifths of the 2008 Academy Award® shortlist for Best Cinematography will be represented on this stage. (McGarvey was nominated for Atonement; Deakins for both The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and No Country for Old Men.) McGarvey’s work encompasses the likes of The Hours, World Trade Centre and High Fidelity; Deakins shot The Shawshank Redemption, Kundun, The Big Lebowski and Fargo, to name but a few.

Performed Reading 2: The Darkest Hour by David Greig

A first glimpse at long awaited film projects from stars of Scottish writing.
In collaboration with the Traverse Theatre, EIFF presents three film scripts currently in development. For the second of these, the Darkest Hour, David Greig presents a new original screenplay (co financed by the UK Film Council and Film 4), The Darkest Hour.
These three very different scripts demonstrate the talent and diversity of contemporary Scottish screenwriting – and our readings offer an opportunity to hear these films of the future being read by professional actors.
