Love blooms between lost souls in the South of France.
Demy’s second feature centres upon a relationship forged between compulsive gamblers over the roulette tables of Nice and Monte Carlo. Moreau’s ravishing divorcée draws the eye of younger thrillseeker Jean (Claude Mann) – but love duly proves as changeable as luck. The deterioration of the original prints kept the film out of circulation for decades, until it was restored by Demy’s widow, Agnes Varda, in 2000.
