Australian filmmaker Benjamin Gilmour, a former paramedic, defied roadblocks and media bans to work closely with the Pashtun tribe on this energetic, nuanced tale of a young boy at loggerheads with his father. The older man expects his son to follow family tradition by shouldering a weapon and fighting the infidel; but young Niaz has other ideas about how to get ahead. The resulting drama is impressively clearsighted and compassionate.
