In the context of this retrospective, these collections of Shirley Clarke’s early, groundbreaking shorts form an essential piece of the jigsaw. From the very beginning Clarke’s love of choreography is crucial. Through this comprehensive collection the development of that passion into a cinematic technique is clearly charted. From the initial juxtapositions of Dance in the Sun, her first short, to the beguiling Bridges Go Round, in which her innovative ideas regarding movement, time and space persuade the bridges of Manhattan to dance, the results are startling, fascinating and beautiful. As a filmmaker Clarke was always conceptually ahead of her time, and her initial experiments with the medium clearly set that precedent. These inspirational short films, including the Academy Award® nominated Skyscraper, form the staircase Clarke built and climbed and which would eventually lead up to the creative heights of The Connection, her incredible feature debut.
