You’ve got to hand it to them: 65 years is a long time to be married.

Hans is stern, controlled and slightly authoritarian – though in a rather nice way. Kerstin, meanwhile, is the kind of carefree, playful type who enjoyings rowing around on Swedish lakes. Differences aside, they’re very much in love with each other, but when their living room needs a revamp, it’s clear that a stand-off is in the works. Kerstin might have a hip, Scandic view of lounge decoration, but Hans prefers the bad trip/nightmare vibe. Though he may advocate fairness, Hans ultimately ignores the wishes of his spouse, and sets about fulfilling his own vision. With a bad grace. And without help. Whilst snapping at his wife.

This battle of wills lures you in, and you almost want to cheer Kerstin on: down with the crazy wallpaper! Let’s have neutral tones! Eventually, you’re rewarded, in classic style. Hans makes the error of having a few days away, and in a highly entertaining sequence which will have you wishing you could high-five them, Kerstin and her aged accomplice, put their own plan into action.

This skirmish over decoration becomes a window into the couples’ life and their individual characters; it’s a lovely and intimate portrait of a 65-year-old relationship which features all the intricate idiosyncrasies you both expect and want to find. It’s gentle, funny and, above all, real.
