The psychology of those who perform for a living provides a constant source of fascination, as is evidenced by the presence in this year’s programme of a number of films centring on actors (Tiramisu (p 77); A Film With Me In It (p 18); Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (p 20).)
Who better to address the subject with knowledge than one of the world’s most iconic performers? In her debut as writer/director, in which she also stars, Moreau profiles four actresses at different stages of the game: her own siren in the prime of life; the ex-starlet (Lucia Bosé) who has married money and stepped out of the spotlight; the budding diva (Francine Racette); and the nervous newcomer to the scene (Caroline Cartier).
On holiday together, the women assess their lives and careers, and the appeal of the “lumière” of the title – the flattering light of public attention – is set against the demands of love, home and family. Beautifully shot and acutely observed, this delicate and personal piece shows Moreau’s great insight as an artist.
