Winner of the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance.
Abu Raed, played by London-based Jordanian actor Nadim Sawalha, is a humble airport cleaner – except to the local street kids (all first-time actors cast from local orphanages), who choose to believe that he’s a globetrotting pilot. Gradually, the lonely widower becomes embroiled in the children’s tough lives. Matalqa’s first feature touches on Jordan’s class divide, but is ultimately a beautifully shot, moving portrait of inner city Amman.
