Yan Scott Wilkinson, Neil Hamilton Wilkinson, Matthew Wood and Martin Noble are British Sea Power, a four-piece rock band (though “rock band” doesn’t do their arcane, eccentric interests justice) from Brighton. Their third and most recent album “Do You Like Rock Music?” was released in January of this year to rave reviews and international fame has followed.

British Sea Power are a unique band, far removed from their musical peers. This is a group with eclectic tastes and interests who are not afraid of investigating and experimenting with different genres and artists; nor are they afraid of exploring new musical landscapes. As their website states, their influences for this album include “floods on Canvey Island, economic migration, Slavia Prague FC, heartache and the Apocalypse – plus the Great Skua (a big piratical sea bird) and the wrestler born Shirley Crabtree and known as Big Daddy”. The band’s fans are no less diverse: they can count on support from other innovative acts such as David Bowie, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead and Jarvis Cocker, none of whom are well-known for ploughing the furrow marked “obvious”.

With a refreshing approach to gigging, British Sea Power are no strangers to playing in unusual settings or taking part in diverse events. (Their previous performances have included gigs in an underground Cornish slate mine, the Chelsea Flower Show, and the seaside on the Scilly Isles. They also participated in the John Betjemen Centenary Gala.) For this 62nd Festival, Mirrorball is taking them underground to The Caves, and we invite you to join us. After a screening of their music videos the band will take part in a discussion, before performing a specially-composed original soundtrack to accompany a feature film screening.
