Nicol Williamson, Ian Holm, David Warner, John Thaw / Fiction / English

In his feature film debut, Jack Gold delivers a tense, brooding, occasionally darkly comic meditation which McGrath adapted from his own play, Events While Guarding the Bofors Gun, set at a British army barracks in occupied West Germany. The cast is strong, with Nicol Williamson outstanding as the drunken, irresponsible Irishman who mercilessly goads the nervous corporal (David Warner) who holds responsibility for the first time.
