Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Geetanjali Thapa, Manya Gupta / Fiction / Hindi, HImachali

A vulnerable young mother and a tough ex-soldier form an uneasy alliance on a dangerous voyage. Together with her three-year-old daughter, a young woman sets off from her tribal community in northern India on a perilous journey to Delhi in search of her missing husband. Along the way they encounter an army deserter who agrees, for a price, to help them reach their destination. With great narrative skill and eloquent images, the film explores the tense relationship between two outsiders whilst depicting the socio-political conditions of India today. [12A]

Please can someone who saw this wonderful film talk to me about the ending? If you haven't, and are lucky enough to be in Edinburgh still, do go and see the second viewing.

I thought it was an interesting way to relieve the tension between the lead characters (whose names escape me by now). The deserter seemed interested in the mother, which was at odds with helping her find the husband. We don't know if they even see each other again, much less wind up together. (Hope I'm not spoiling the ending...) My first thought was he didn't want to face her and give her the news. I still think that's most likely, though it's ambiguous enough that you could even suspect him of being responsible. Maybe I missed something.

    What was your impression?
