Father and Sons
Wang Bing/China/2014/Chinese dialogue/Colour/Non-DCI Digital/87 min
Sat 28 June 10:00 Filmhouse 3 and 15:30 Filmhouse 2
Director: Wang Bing
This long-take film, first shown at an installation at the Centre Pompidou in April 2014, is a kind of cousin to Wang Bing’s Three Sisters. It features two boys who appear briefly near the end of the earlier film. Here, we enter the dwelling of the boys and their father. “He sleeps during the day, when his two sons are outside. All three of them live in a room of four square metres. Inside this small space we see a stove and a bed, even smaller than a couch. They all sleep there, completely without privacy.
At night, the father leaves the bed to his sons and goes to work. Father and Sons is the visual and aural study of the family’s space and the intimate, but also fragmented, way of life for which the space serves as a setting.
