‘Scotland doesnae mean much tae Glasgow folk.’
Adapted from the phenomenally successful 1946 play staged by Glasgow’s Unity Theatre, The Gorbals Story is still remarkable for its eschewing of the sentimental Scottish stereotypes of its contemporaries to become one of the first attempts at presenting a naturalistic portrait of a working-class Glasgow community. An important landmark in depictions of cinematic Scottishness, it was also one of the key films in EIFF’s 1982 Scotch Reels event, which will be discussed by Colin McArthur in this year’s Edinburgh Film Guild Forsyth Hardy Lecture.
