Project Nim
They studied a chimp, but learnt much more about themselves.
From the director of Man on Wire (EIFF 2008), Project Nim tells the almost incredible but entirely true story of Columbia University professor Herb Terrace’s titular research programme – to try and teach a chimpanzee language by having him brought up as one of the children of a human family. Negotiating this moral minefield with absolute restraint and not a hint of judgement, Marsh has also elicited remarkable candour from all the main protagonists, who, one suspects, may only now be able to see the folly of their part in the project. Fascinating. As part of Reel Science, the second screening will be followed by an in depth discussion with a bioethicist.
