Au Revoir Taipei
Jack Yao, Amber Kuo, Joseph Chang, Lawrence Ko, Frankie Gao / Fiction / Mandarin, Taiwanese
A hectic and hilarious crime caper played out on the neon streets of Taipei.
Shy student Kai is desperate to visit his girlfriend in France, whether she likes it or not. When a spot of smalltime gangstering offers itself as a route to an airfare, he bites – little suspecting that his evening, his travel plans and his relationship are all about to be set seriously off kilter… Sharply choreographed and winningly eccentric, this is a total delight and a tremendously confident debut.
#1 / Sunday 27 June, 2010 / 00:17 GMTA quirky and thoroughly likeable rom-com that offers a splash of life in a Taiwanese metropolis. The plot is fairly flimsy and I thought the score just didn’t fit at all, but there’s plenty to admire here – some lovely, deft touches, such as the communal dancing, and the orange-suited, fairly hopeless and really quite nice gangsters. The romance is so gradual and gentle that by the end of the film, you truly want them to get together. Ah, sweet. 6/10
