Gulabi Talkies
Umashree, K G Krishnamurthy, M D Pallavi, Praveera, Poornima Mohan, Ashok Sandip
A poetically beautiful film by Girish Kasaravalli, from Karnataka.
Gulabi is a discarded fiftysomething woman, an outcast living on an island with the fisherfolk. Her obsession for films is fuelled with the introduction of a television in her life and her village hut turns into a hub. This classically beautiful film is set in the complex decade of the 90s, when the Indian economy
opened up to allow foreign vessels to fish in Indian waters, which in turn prompted community tensions on the Karnataka coast line.
